Deception Pass and Camano Island

Deception Pass

Deception Pass is north of Whidbey Island. We are actually pretty close to the southern end of Whidbey (due east), but the fastest way to get there is to drive North on the mainland and take Highway 20, which includes a series of bridges to get there. Otherwise, it is a ferry across to the southern end of the island and a drive up.

Apparently, Deception Pass got its name because explorers thought they had found a peninsula and not an island, as it looked landlocked. Since it is quite a drive for us, we barely scratched the surface of exploring this area, but we do look forward to going back!

Our first visit here was in late March, the wildflowers were just beautiful. This is Blue Eyed Grass.

This is a shot straight down from the bridge, heading from the northernmost point of Whidbey Island to Pass Island. It seemed as though there was a spring below the surface of the water, but there also seemed to be something tidal happening.

Here is a neat view of Deception Pass also from the bridge.

Here is another view of the pass from Pass Island.

Here is shot of Pass Island, itself with a really lovely meadow covered with flowers leading to a group of several types of trees, including madrone.

Camano Island

Camano Island is directly east of here and inland to Whidbey Island. It is seperated by the delta created by the Stillaguamish River entering the Ocean.

A local that I met on the beach told me that during my visit, the tide was as low as she had ever seen it. Apparently, the beach that I took the shot from isn't always accessible.

In the distance, you can see Whidbey Island.

And some beautiful lupine on the shore.

These beautiful madrones were on a trail at the top of the cliff.
